Spencer's Story

On December 11th 2006, our lives changed forever, Spencer had been complaining of tummy ache for the previous two nights, as it was most unusual of him to be ill, I decided to take him to our Doctors for a check up. I managed to get an appointment straight away and it soon became apparent that this was more than just a tummy bug!

The Doctor immediately transferred us to the Royal Alexander Children’s Hospital in Brighton for further investigations and this was when the true nightmare began! As time went on, he was given various scans and x-rays and you could tell that the consultants investigating were becoming more senior as the day wore on! Eventually the same afternoon the consultants gathered round and gave us the devastating news – Spencer had cancer, there was a possibility that it was either Wilms or Neuroblastoma, but they did say they thought it was Neuroblastoma! I can recall to this day that I said “that is good then” and everybody just looked around with grief etched on their faces – I knew then that it was indeed very bad news.

We stayed in Brighton hospital overnight and the next morning, Spencer was so seriously ill that an ambulance took us straight to Marsden with the sirens going and flashing lights on. It was confirmed that Spencer had neuroblastoma and the disease was widespread. The main tumour was very large and was attached to his left adrenal gland; it had also spread to his lymphatic glands in his neck.
We spent most of 2007 in and out of various hospitals across Brighton and London, more time in than out! Spencer has undergone various treatments, all very hard and pretty horrific.

Here is a brief diary of the main parts of the treatment below:

1. Biopsy, bone marrow and insertion of central line – December 14th 2006
Spencer was admitted to St Georges Hospital, Tooting, where he went for his first general anaesthetic: they took a biopsy of the tumour and also checked his bone marrow. He had a central line (Hickman line) fitted so they could administer his drugs throughout forthcoming treatments without having to keep inserting needles in him.

2. Surgery – April 2007
Surgery was carried out at St Georges Hospital: the surgery lasting eight, nail biting stressful hours, but was very successful. We spent nine days here, two of these with Spencer in intensive care.

3. Stem cell transplant and high dose chemotherapy – June 2007
Unfortunately, as always throughout Spencer’s treatment – things didn’t go to plan and it took seven attempts to try and obtain enough bone marrow for his transplant, in the end they decided to go with what they managed to obtain, but it was below the minimum level, however after so many attempts they decided they had to go with it. Throughout high dose he contracted a virus and ended up in isolation at the Royal Marsden for seven long weeks. We also had another stay in intensive care as his organs began to fail, but fortunately he soon recovered.

4. Radiotherapy – August 2007
This involved travelling daily to the Royal Marsden for three weeks. He went under a general anaesthetic everyday for radiotherapy which lasted twenty minutes.

Unfortunately on November 27th 2007 Spencer was feeling poorly and admitted to Brighton Hospital, regrettably the cancer had returned and there was no cure. Even Spencer must have known, because he turned to us and pleaded "no more needles, Mummy and Daddy". We came home with Spencer on Friday 7th December, we were told that he would not have long to live, as the cancer was so aggressive.
On the 4th January Spencer passed peacefully away at home, his last words were “night night girls, love you”

He is our brave little monkey and will be forever in our hearts.

Spencer Bear

The Ann Bickmore Fund were looking for a bear to give to the Ambulance service as they like to have them on board when dealing with traumatised children and found this delightful little bear. His name is Spencer Bear.
Sadly, we knew Spencer Roberts who died in January, 2008 aged 3, so all our bears donated in his memory. His big sister, Amalia presented the the first 100 bears on our behalf. Marks & Spencers, Eastbourne heard our story and their Staff donated £150 with a further £100 voucher for the next batch of bears.
A very kind Grandma has given us another £100 after her grandaughter received one having been knocked down by a reversing van. We understand that Ted E Bear - named after the paramedic - was an incredible comfort to a small girl.

Meet Amalia, Spencer's Sister

My Special Friend Bethany May

At the Royal Marsden Cancer Hospital, unfortunately there are loads of children from babies to teenagers who are fighting cancer on the children's ward. From the people I met there is one special little girl who really sticks out. That little girl is Bethany May. When I first met Bethany May I couldn't resist falling in love with her. The wierd and sad thing is cancer attacts the most nicest people who really don't deserve it. To me, Bethany is the little sister I never had.

One of the main events I remember with Bethany was when me, mum, dad, Bethany and Bethany's mum and dad Katie and Ben, went to the Emily Ash Holiday Home in Hastings. It was great! We went to Camber Sands and me, Bethany and Ben climbed sand dunes, it was so much fun. Bethany loves playing with dolls, so throughout the holiday, I helped look after "Baby Annabel".

A few weeks after the holiday, I received a parcel in the post, I had no idea what it was, I opened it and it said " To my very special friend Amalia" It continued by saying" just a little memento of a wonderful week, special memories for ever and ever. Thankyou for looking after me and taking extra care of Baby Annabel for me Lots of Love Bethany xxxx" When I read this, I started to cry, it was full of wonderful photographs and memories I will cherish for ever and ever!

When I met Bethany she was very shy and very very ill from cancer, but now she's on the mend. We still desparately need money for research, into neuroblastoma, so please make take time to go to Bethany's website http://www.bethanymay.com/

Thankyou for being such a joy to us. You have brought us so many memories, like when you thought there was a fire and stopped at the door and yelled "everybody get out, theres a fire"! (It wasn't a fire alarm he heard but our plumber upstairs using a drill!) Even though you yelled at me, you were still an AMAZING brother! It was really funny when you kissed your guns and said "chicks love it, nurses love it better"!
You are awesome and I will always love and miss you.

About Neuroblastoma

Neuroblastoma often begins in the nerve tissue of the adrenal glands. There are two adrenal glands, one on top of each kidney in the back of the upper abdomen. The adrenal glands produce important hormones that help control heart rate, blood pressure, blood sugar, and the way the body reacts to stress. Neuroblastoma may also begin in the chest, in nerve tissue near the spine in the neck, or in the spinal cord.

Fewer than 100 children are diagnosed with neuroblastoma in the UK each year. Neuroblastoma most often begins during early childhood, usually in children younger than 5 years. It sometimes forms before birth but is usually found later, when the tumor begins to grow and cause symptoms. In rare cases, neuroblastoma may be found before birth by fetal ultrasound.
By the time neuroblastoma is diagnosed, the cancer has usually metastasized (spread), most often to the lymph nodes, bones, bone marrow, liver, and skin.

Causes of Neuroblastoma

As with most cancers, the cause of neuroblastoma is unknown. As with other cancers, it is not infectious and cannot be passed on to other people.

Signs and symptoms

The first symptoms are often vague, such as loss of appetite, tiredness and pain in the bones. Other symptoms vary, depending on where the neuroblastoma starts:
If the tumour is in the abdomen, the child’s tummy may be swollen and they may complain of constipation or have difficulty passing urine. Sometimes the child's blood pressure is found to be high.
If the tumour affects the chest area, the child may be breathless and have difficulty swallowing.
If the tumour occurs in the neck, it may be visible as a lump as well as affecting breathing and swallowing.
Less often, children may have weakness in the legs and walk unsteadily if the tumour is pressing on the spinal cord.
Very rarely, children may have jerky eye and muscle movements associated with the neuroblastoma.

How it is diagnosed

A variety of tests and investigations may be needed to diagnose a neuroblastoma. Tests such as x-rays, CT or MRI scans, bone marrow tests and blood tests are carried out to find the exact position of the neuroblastoma within the body and to see whether it has spread. This is known as staging.
A specific type of urine test will also be done. Nearly all (9 out of 10) children with neuroblastoma will have substances called vanillylmandelic acid (VMA), or homovanillic acid (HVA), in their urine. Measuring the VMA and HVA in the urine can help to confirm the diagnosis.
An mIBG (meta-iodo-benzyl guanidine) scan may also be done. mIBG is a substance that is taken up by neuroblastoma cells. It is given by injection. Attaching a small amount of radioactive iodine to the mIBG enables the tumours to be seen by a radiation scanner. mIBG may also be used as a treatment.A small sample of cells are usually taken from the tumour (biopsy) during an operation under a general anaesthetic. The cells are then examined under a microscope. Other tests, collectively referred to as tumour biology are also carried out on these cells in the laboratory.Staging
The 'stage' of a cancer is a term used to describe its size and whether it has spread beyond its original site. Knowing the particular type, and the stage, of the cancer helps the doctors to decide on the best treatment for the child.

A commonly used staging system for neuroblastoma is described below:

Stage 1

The cancer is contained within one area of the body (localised) and there is no evidence of it having spread. It can be completely removed by surgery, or there may be very small (microscopic) amounts of tumour left

Stage 2A

The cancer is localised and has not begun to spread, but cannot be completely removed by surgery

Stage 2B

The cancer is localised and has begun to spread into nearby lymph nodes

Stage 3

The cancer has spread into surrounding organs and structures, but has not spread to distant areas of the body

Stage 4

The cancer has spread to distant lymph nodes, bone, bone marrow, liver, skin or other organs

Stage 4S

The cancer is localised (as in stage 1, 2A or 2B) and has begun to spread to the liver, skin or to some extent the bone marrow. This is found in children under one year old.
If the cancer has spread to distant parts of the body, this is known as secondary, or metastatic cancer.
If the cancer comes back after initial treatment, this is known as recurrent cancer.Treatment
The treatment of neuroblastoma depends on the age of the child, the size and position of the tumour, the tumour biology, and whether the neuroblastoma has spread.
SurgeryFor Neuroblastoma tumours that have not spread (localised tumours), the treatment is usually surgery. If the tumour is at an early stage and there is no evidence that it has spread to the lymph nodes or other parts of the body, an operation to remove the tumour, or as much of it as possible, will be done. In children with localised tumours, a cure is usually possible. However, if, due to the tumour biology results, the tumour is classed as 'high risk', further treatment will be needed. If the tumour is initially too large to remove safely, then chemotherapy will be given to shrink it down before surgery.
ChemotherapyIf the tumour has already spread by the time of diagnosis, or is indicated as being high risk by the tumour biology result, intensive chemotherapy is needed. Chemotherapy is the use of anti-cancer (cytotoxic) drugs to destroy cancer cells. It is usually given as injections and drips (infusions) into a vein.
High dose chemotherapy with stem-cell rescueIf the neuroblastoma has spread to several parts of the body, or is high risk, high-dose chemotherapy with stem cell rescue is used (after the initial courses of chemotherapy).High doses of chemotherapy 'wipe out' the body's bone marrow (where blood cells are made). To prevent the problems that this causes, stem cells (blood cells at their earliest stages of development) are collected from the child through a drip, before the chemotherapy is given. They are then frozen and stored. After the chemotherapy, the stem cells are given back to the child (again through a drip). The stem cells make their way into the bone marrow where they grow and develop into mature blood cells.
RadiotherapyIf the neuroblastoma has spread to several parts of the body or is high risk, external radiotherapy may be given. This uses high-energy rays to destroy the cancer cells, while doing as little harm as possible to normal cells. External radiotherapy is given from a machine outside of the body. Internal radiotherapy may sometimes be given using radioactive mIBG. Radioactive mIBG is similar to the investigation used to diagnose a neuroblastoma, but uses higher doses of radioactivity to kill the cancer cells.Younger Children
Neuroblastoma is an unusual type of cancer because younger children (under the age of 12 months) can get 'good risk' tumours. Stage 4S disease can often get better on its own. For these very young children, minimal, or even no treatment may be required. The child will just be carefully monitored for the next few years. The tumour will very often either disappear completely on its own, or it may develop into a non-cancerous (benign) tumour called a ganglioneuroma.Ganglioneuromas are usually harmless and will not cause any problems or need any treatment.Most children under the age of 12 months with neuroblastoma are cured.

Side Effects of Treatment

Treatment often causes side effects. Any possible side effects will depend upon the actual treatment being given and the part of the body that is being treated. Side effects can include: feeling sick (nausea) and vomiting, hair loss, increased risk of infection, bruising and bleeding, tiredness and diarrhoea.

Late side effects
A small number of children may develop late side effects, sometimes many years after treatment. These include possible reduction in bone growth, fertility problems, a change in the way the heart and the kidneys work, hearing problems and a slightly increased risk of developing another cancer in later life.

We now have a new member of Team Spence "Anatomical Man" This mystery person run the Brighton Brooks 10km race on the 21st November in an impressive time of 41.38. "who is the face behind the mask - no one knows" Anatomical Man can be followed on Facebook and Twitter.

October 2010

The Shining Star Talent Show took place on the 30th October and what an amazing success it was, we raised £2271, an amazing result. The contestants that took part were all excellent and we didn't envy the celebrity judges, Julie Cowell, Paul Nicholas and Garry Wilson who had to make the difficult decision to find the overall winner. In the end the title went to Jez Minfaq who gave a wonderful performance, as Michael Jackson.

Our special thanks go to Paul Nicholas School of Acting, all the contestants, judges and all the volunteers who worked so hard, both back stage and front of house

We held a summer evening of dining in St Margaret's Church Cottage and what a successful night it was, we managed to raise over £1100 and everyone that came, gave us so much positive feedback - I have to say the pig racing just added to the evening of fun. A special thank you must go to Trevor for being able to cater for 70 people in a very cramped space. We would also like to thank everyone who helped us out on the night - "Team Spence" really worked as an A class team - you were all amazing.

"Sally cycles for Remember Spencer "- After regaining her fitness, following treatment for breast cancer, Sally completed a 50 mile bike ride to Littlehampton and back. An amazing achievement and our heartfelt thanks go to Sally for supporting our cause. Sally raised an amazing £1500.

Well done to Mary Rowe for completing a sponsored slim and losing an amazing 21lbs, fantastic result and we are all so proud.

Monkey Travels -Monkey has just returned from Lemnos, Greece where he had a brilliant, albeit exhausting time, he tried water skiing, Kayaking, Dinghy Sailing and many more activities, all caught on camera. Hes at home for a rest now - not sure where he will be travelling to next! (We have now added a slideshow on the site, so everyone can have a look at his photos)


We have now received our Charity Registration No: 1136422. Amazing news and thanks to everyone who works so tirelessly for our Charity.


Monkey Travels - Monkey has now travelled to Turkey, the latest picture is of him climbing the high ropes (what a brave monkey he was!)- on holiday with the Durnfords and a very special thank you to Emma for looking after him so well

Our first Team Spence fundraisng night was held on the 2nd May (a race night). We excelled all our expectations and managed to raise in excess of £1300, a huge thank you goes to Brett & Kelly who had arranged this on our behalf. A great time was had by all and we have received such wonderful feedback - thanks to all those who attended and raised such a huge amount by their kind generosity

Childrens talent show - 30th October 2010 at Peacehaven Meridian Centre, in conjuction with Paul Nicholas School of Acting. So far guest judges include Julie Cowell and Paul Nicholas!! Watch this space for more updates!!!

Monkey Travels -Monkey has now gone from Cardiff to Limerick (see picture). Next holiday - Turkey, cant wait to see photos, so watch this space!!!

18th April

A beautiful Sunny day for the inaugral Brighton Marathon and we had 4 Team Spence Members taking part, Anna managed a personal best of 5 hours 5. John completed it in 3 hours 27, Paul in 4 hours 10 and Amanda with another PB of 6 hours 41. A brilliant day was had by all and a huge thank you once again to all our wonderful supporters that cheered us all the way round. We hope to have many more runners in the Brighton 2011 Marathon - so watch this space!!!

We have now started a new feature "Monkey Travels". Spencers monkey is now on a mission to travel the world and a picture will be taken everywhere he goes, together with any important events. The first picture is taken at the Millenium Stadium Cardiff, watching Wales play rugby in the six nations. (This has been a childhood ambition of Paul's) but Monkey had a fabulous time too! Watch this space to see where he pops up next!!!

Two more members have joined "Team Spence", Brett and Kelly Powell. They have kindly organised a race night at the Seaford Rugby Club on 2nd May. It will be a brilliant fun night and there will also be a charity auction and raffle with lots of fabulous prizes, so please support this fantastic night!


FEBRUARY 20th 2010

Craig the owner of Coastal Cruiserz celebrated the clubs anniversary by arranging a fund raising event for us in Eastbourne. Thanks to Craig and all those involved for raising much needed funds for us. Please welcome our newest "Team Spence" members, Craig & Anna and also all those invoved with Coastal Cruiserz.

Well that's the runs over for this year, next one will be Sussex Beacon Half Marathon in February, followed by the first ever Brighton Marathon in April.

Seaford Triathlon 15th August, this was Paul's first triathlon and he completed it in 50 minutes Well done Paul! And on top of this he competed in the half marathon with Anna the very next day - amazing!!

John Durnford completed the half marathon on the 16th August in a time of 1 hour 25 and Anna Dilley completed the same race in 2 hours 10, unbelievable times.

Lisa Durnford, Deirdre Durnford and Carol Parker completed the 5km and once again all did amazingly well. Deirdre, even won her age category, so got a prize!

And finally, Amanda completed the 10km.

A really well done goes to all and also to our loyal supporters who were cheering us on, every step of the way!!

Anna & Amanda completed the Seaford half marathon in 3 hours 3 minutes and Michelle Bunce completed the same course in 3 hours 13 minutes. Well done to all.

Lisa Durnford, Deirdre Durnford and Carol Parker have all now signed up for the 5km in Seaford on the 16th August. Unfortunately Amanda has picked up a deep tissue tear, so now can not compete in the half marathon at Seaford, but like a Knight in shining Armour, Paul is now going to take her place, but is also going to compete in the triathlon the day before in Seaford. So we wish him all the best and thank him for being such a star (or in most peoples words - MAD!!)
An article has been published about our site in The Peacehaven Directory and the Co-Editor Keith Briffett has been be raising money for us by competing in the Sussex Triathlon. For his first triathlon his results were amazing and we wish him well in his next events.

Mark Taylor and Pete Stevens have now joined us for the Dublin Marathon in October. Just remember Team Spence welcomes all.

Lisa and John have also designed a 6ft banner for all our supporters to cheer us on and we have now received our first batch of "Team Spence T-shirts".

Paul Roberts has kindly donated 10 cool max running vests with the Team Spence logo on for our runners.


Anna & Amanda completed the 10km in Bognor in 66.56 minutes and Paul completed the course in 46.51 minutes.
